Mythbusters Live: Dream Big and Keep at It!

A review by Marketing and Public Relations Intern, Mckell Keeney

I stepped out of the rare rain and into the sold-out Mythbusters Live show on Friday, November 22 at Mesa Arts Center. The lobby was buzzing with people vying to get closer to the merchandise tables. These guys have ardent fans! Inside the acoustically amazing Ikeda Theater, the props on stage were intriguing, and video was playing with teasers for the upcoming season of Mythbusters that starts in January. It looks like they’re going to be demoing the new Tesla electric car, a sporty but pricey head-turner. What a sweet job perk! I would love to take a Tesla through its paces.

Adam Savage is a very funny guy. He thinks on his feet, reacting instantly to the audience. Jamie is philosophical. I was thinking that neither of them used their big platform to promote a particular cause (such as saving the environment or world peace), but then I remembered that during the Q&A session, someone asked Jamie how Mythbusters came to be. Jamie said he went to the Caribbean to open a dive shop. Before long, he realized that wasn’t what he wanted to do. He decided he wanted to do something in science. He kept working at it until he was successful. His message to the audience was to follow our dreams, and to keep working on them without giving up. In other words, “Dream Big and Keep at It”! That’s a great inspirational reminder from someone who chose his path, and who continues to achieve his goals through persistence.

About 10 audience members were recruited throughout the show to come up on stage and assist. A mother and daughter helped prepare phone books for a power-of-friction demonstration with Adam up on a pulley putting his trust in phone books to keep him from a fall to the stage. A 13-year-old boy was enlisted to help demonstrate a law of physics involving an oversized sledgehammer. The show ender and most exciting stunt was a paint ball attack on an audience member dressed in Adam’s metal coat of armor. Keep an eye on Mesa Arts Center’s newsletter and website for announcements of tickets sales for shows next year that you won’t want to miss!
